Maarten about CD 'Touch' |
 |
|
It has always been my ambition to bring together a
variety of sounds, colors, rhythms and structures. From the touch of
a hand on a drum to the heartbeat of a stick. From primitive rhythms
on wood and real skin to bare hands on timpani and bass drum, to
dreaming piano and drums, ending jazzy and funky on kit. These are
my musical roots, which I hope you will enjoy. |
|
My warmest thanks to Edwin van der Kley who offered
me this chance, and Eelco Grimm, the most musical technology freak
I’ve ever met. They made my dream come true.
Signed, Maarten van der Valk. |

Released CD’s on which I perform with my
“Potter’s” timps. |
| Cantatas - Johann Sebastian Bach - Bach
Collegium Japan. |
| Accidentally this is one of the few cd’s I don’t play on my
Potter’s timps, but on a small pair of “Geert Jan van der Heide”
timps. These are a copy of an early 18th Century pair from Germany.
A beautiful cd , the 21st of a series still to follow. It proves at
the same time that the Japanese are coming closer concerning
intesity and the old music practise. |
| "Les Indes Galantes" - Jean Philippe Rameau. |
| French 18th Century baroque. Magnificant, ‘fantastic’ music.
Sometimes this feels like a kind of pop music, also because of the
‘finds’ of color combinations between different instruments. Last
year -although slightly adjusted- we with our “Orchestra” and
conductor Frans Brüggen performed this piece as an opera / ballet.
In Poland, The Netherlands and Italy we did 14 performances. Great
to do once, let alone 14 times! On this one definately my Potter’s
timps and even a tambourine and a (Vienna!) wooden ‘Provencale’
drum. |
| "Exeptional Masterpieces" - Combattimento Consort
Amsterdam. |
| This Super Audio / Multichannel CD has been out since November
2001 and has recieved a lot of attention as well as good critics
throughout the world. (by the way, it is also playable on normal cd
recorders!) The idea of this cd was partly my initiative and
therefor in one of the pieces specially chosen by Jan Willem de
Vriend, a work by Johann Samuel Endler (1694-1762), I have a solo
part on 5 timps. For those days very unusual. It is sort of an
ennobeled continuo part; wonderful to perform. Next to three of my
Potter’s I use my two A.A. van der Hoek ‘machine’ timpani. (for more
info look at page ‘Drums’) For the most other pieces on this cd I am
responsable as a recording producer. |
